What Is a TimeBank?
A TimeBank is a community of people who support each other. When you spend an hour to do something for an individual or group, you earn a Time Dollar. Then you can use that Time Dollar to buy an hour of any other member's time or engage in a group activity offered by a member. To participate in a TimeBank, you set up an online account that allows you to advertise services you would like to offer or receive and keeps track of Time Dollars you've earned and spent.
It's that simple. Yet it also has profound effects. You come to think of members as your neighbors and build an oldfashioned extended family of people who take care of each other. TimeBanks are limited only by the imagination of their members, so they reflect the unique needs and aspirations of their own communities.
Why a TimeBank?
At the Roanoke Valley TimeBank we connect unmet needs with untapped resources in order to build support, strength, and trust in the community. Through individual exchanges as well as by engaging with affiliated cultural and service organizations such as The Conflict Resolution Center, Local Colors and The Fashionista Club, we promote our mutual interests and socially beneficial goals.
